Stuffplug 3.5 Released!

Thursday 10 January 2008, 00:23

Finally!
After about two months of hard work finishing up all the rough edges on the stuffplug code I had back then, it's finally ready to be released! biggrin.gif
First and foremost, it's now compatible with WLM 8.5! smile.gif
Other changes from 3.0.387 include, but are definitely not limited to:
  • *loads* of bugfixes
  • Complete User-Interface overhaul
  • New feature: ProperColorize
  • New feature: GroupBlock
  • New feature: Security Speedup
  • Updated feature: FakeInvite
  • Updated feature: FriendlyName Editor (you can now enable and disable without restarting)
  • Non-finished features are now in a user-accessible "Experimental" menu.
This isn't quite the long list you've probably expected for such a major release, but that's because most of the changes are actually internal or related to new features that are still far from finished.

Also, please note that this version is not compatible with Windows Live Messenger 9 beta for now.
We will release a seperate, new, version for that later.

Anyway, download here

Have fun,
TB

as an extra future, is it possible to add oversized display-picture and oversized emoticons again??

really miss those

Comment by lordy

Thursday 10 January 2008, 10:16

IIRC the reason for there not beign any oversized emoticons/DPs anymore is that MSN now resizes these on the server and as such they never arrive at your computer oversized, even if that's wrong, there was a reason for it being that it wouldn't work right anymore so it wont be added back in

Aah... beautiful! I guess lots of people have been waiting for this, and I had a lot of fun testing and translating this brilliant piece of work! smile.gif

Great work TB! Now, let's wait for the other translators to finish their job so we can get a full multilingual version out soon. wink.gif Dutch users can already enjoy the translation by me and my friend DarylR (Daryl).

Hopefully, the world can now enjoy this release as much as we did while testing and translating it. Get this, people, you really want this! tongue.gif

The memory flusher feature will occasionally force recently unused memory pages to your page file to free up RAM for other things.

The security speed up feature is described in detail here: http://www.stuffplug.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1123

As a quick summary, messenger uses an inefficient method of catching bad words so that if you send/recieve a very large message, it will freeze messenger because it has to scan that long message several times. So this feature jumps in an uses a more efficient method of search.

You guys should read what TB said in his blog answering to me:

QUOTE
On a slightly different note, I'd like to comment on what warmth said in reply to an earlier post. Yes, StuffPlug currently is pretty much dead: the code I have is just no longer compatible with the changes in WLM9, and I'd have to start a re-write sometime. Problem is that most of StuffPlug's features aren't really relevant anymore on Messenger 9, and so trying to re-write the entire beast for WLM9 won't really get me anywhere. I'd much rather start off with something small and build it up from there, much like StuffPlug was in the beginning. So if you have anything, anything at all, that bothers you about Messenger 9, please do tell me, and it might spark that required bit of passion to start working on something again.

As for helping development of other projects; I have actually helped and contributed to both Plus! and MD in the past, and if I can help them again I'd still love to, but setting up an environment for different people to work on the same (hobby) project takes time and effort, and I'm not sure either of us are really ready to make that kind of effort.

So, if you read this: please do leave a comment if you have any views on the whole lack of third-party development on Messenger 9, or if you have something that you'd like to see changed in Messenger 9 by a third-party add-on.

I hope that TB doesn't get mad because me posting this here... this maybe will avoid people to get excited about something is going to not appear... like Calyp says...

It would be great to see a script or addon to plus with some of the features that Stuffplug use to offer for messenger I really want to be able to edit my Display Name directly in the main contact window with out having to go to the options. Since the new plus is 100% compatible with the newest messenger I don't see why this wouldn't be possible.

I use firefox as my default browser, messenger 8.5 alway opened hotmail in internet explorer,
since updating to wml 2009 messsenger now opens hotmail in firefox which is a royal pain when using more than one messenger account because you have to keep signing in and out of accounts on firefox.

Wednesday 4 March 2009, 05:09

The reason is very simple... they left the work about WLM9 many months ago. So, that BETA was obsolete.

Then they started the project again (for about 4 months ago), but with the idea to join the most of their known services in one Suite. Windows Live Essentials.

I'm not sure (please, if I'm wrong, correct me), but I think that the idea about 14 is use this number as official version is for all of its components (doesn't matter if they're Windows Live Messenger, OneCare, Writer, even Microsoft Office and many others).

So the next version of Office will be 14 too; also, Office will have components for Windows Live Essntials.

Is probably better for us if we start to call the new version of Windows Live Messenger as 14, instead of 9. wink.gif

Comment by Aardvark

Wednesday 4 March 2009, 05:46

Strictly speaking it was never "WLM 9" either - WLM 2009. Therefore they should be able to fiddle with the version number as much as they like, as strictly speaking you should be saying "WLM 2009" not "WLM 9".

Also an interesting point of note is that the next version of Office will not be the 13th version of Office. The current version of version of Office (2007) is Office12. Microsoft feels that 13 will make their product more or less jinxed, and so are skipping it and going straight to 14.

i do appreciate that but considering how quickly microsoft releases new versions of messenger if you take 3 years to get this compatable with 9.0 then by the time of release the build will only support an obsolette version of messenger, i therefore thought that developement would move a little faster considering its for the messenger platform.

My favorite feature in StuffPlug was the time zone clock set for each contact appearing below their display picture. That thing was one of the best features ever, since I have friends all around the world, and I should be constantly mindful of the(ir) time. I wonder if that's not too difficult to embed into the latest WLM...

And I can't find a plugin out there that has that same feature, either. It's a real shame. I really miss StuffPlug.
